Rooney Applauds Court Decision Recognizing All Families

In 2008, a trial court in Harrisburg denied a mother joint custody rights over her child merely because she is a lesbian. Recently, Pennsylvania’s Superior Court righted that wrong. In its decision, the Superior Court overruled prior decisions denying equal rights to gay parents and held that “a homosexual parent bears no special evidentiary presumption in a child custody case.” In other words, from this day forward, gay and lesbian parents will be treated the same way as straight parents in child custody proceedings.

As a supporter of equal rights for all Pennsylvanians, I applaud this decision. It is an important step forward in affirming the dignity of all our citizens regardless of sexual orientation. Much work remains to be done, however, and if elected, I will continue to fight for equal rights for all Pennsylvanians regardless of color, creed, gender or sexual orientation every single day.
